Scar Treatment

How do you treat scars?

The best way to treat a scar depends on several factors, including the type, age, and severity of the scar, as well as your individual goals. Here’s a general breakdown of approaches:

Scar Minimization During Healing:

  • Wound Care: Proper wound cleaning, moisturizing, and sun protection during the healing phase can significantly influence scar formation.

Over-the-Counter Treatments (for the first 3 Months):

  • Silicone gels/sheets: These help keep the scar hydrated and supple, potentially minimizing scar formation. They work best on newer scars.
  • Scar massage: Massaging the scar with a moisturizer can improve blood flow and potentially soften the scar tissue.

Prescription Treatments (requires a dermatologist):

  • Corticosteroid creams/Injections: These can reduce inflammation and redness in raised scars like keloids or hypertrophic scars.
  • Retinoid creams: These stimulate collagen production and may improve the appearance of some scars.

Dermatological Procedures (most effective, requires a dermatologist):

  • Laser therapy: Different types of lasers target various scar concerns, like redness, texture, or raised scars. In particular, CO2 Ablative Lasers and Fraxel® Non-Ablative Lasers can be used to stimulate collagen production for fresh, healthier, skin.
  • Dermabrasion/Microneedling: These create controlled injuries to the skin, triggering collagen production and potentially improving scar appearance.
  • Surgery: In some cases, scar revision surgery might be an option, such as scar excision or scar camouflage surgery.

Here are some additional points to consider:

  • Scars take time to improve: Most scar treatments show gradual improvement over weeks to months.
  • Realistic expectations: No treatment can completely erase a scar, but they can significantly improve its appearance.
  • Consult our cosmetic dermatologist and surgeon, Dr. Parth Patel: he can assess your scar and recommend the most suitable treatment options.

Remember, early intervention is generally better. If you have a new scar or are concerned about an existing one, talk to our cosmetic dermatologist and surgeon,  Dr. Parth Patel to discuss the best course of action for you.
