Why are custom orthotics useful?

Custom orthotics are useful for you daily life for several reasons:

  1. Improved comfort: Custom orthotics are made specifically to fit the unique size, shape and contour of an individual’s foot, providing better support and cushioning. This can help improve comfort and reduce pain or discomfort associated with certain foot conditions.

  2. Correcting foot abnormalities: Custom orthotics can be designed to correct foot abnormalities such as flat feet, high arches, and overpronation or supination. By providing the proper support and alignment, orthotics can help improve gait and reduce the risk of injury. Your podiatrist ensure an appropriate fit to assist with any foot deficiencies.

  3. Managing certain medical conditions: Custom orthotics can be helpful in managing certain medical conditions such as plantar fasciitis, bunions, and diabetic foot ulcers. By providing additional support and cushioning to the affected area, orthotics can help relieve pain and promote healing.

  4. Preventing injuries: Custom orthotics can help prevent injuries by providing additional support and cushioning during physical activity. This is especially important for athletes or individuals who engage in high-impact sports or activities. A sleek yet durable type of sport orthotic can transform player performance and to a certain degree protect from sustaining possible injuries.

  5. Long-lasting durability: Custom orthotics are typically made from high-quality materials and can last for years with proper care. This makes them a cost-effective solution for individuals who require long-term foot support.

Overall, custom orthotics can be a valuable tool in promoting foot health and reducing the risk of injury or discomfort associated with certain foot conditions. They are designed to provide personalized support and cushioning that can help improve mobility, reduce pain, and enhance overall quality of life.

What is the difference between custom and over the counter orthotics?

Custom orthotics are often considered to be superior to over-the-counter orthotics because they are specifically designed to meet an individual’s unique foot and biomechanical needs. Custom orthotics are made based on a 3D image of your foot using the highest scanning technology. This type of technology  allows them to be precisely tailored to the individual’s foot shape, arch type, and gait pattern.

Over-the-counter orthotics, on the other hand, are designed to provide a generic level of support and cushioning to the feet, without taking into account the specific needs of the individual. They are certainly a good alternative and worth trying prior to committing to custom orthotics – but just understanding a tailored product may offer more benefit as it is personalized.  Custom orthotics can provide more targeted support and cushioning to specific areas of the foot, and can be adjusted over time to ensure optimal fit and function.

However, it is important to note that custom orthotics can be more expensive than over-the-counter orthotics, and may not be covered by insurance. At PS Foot & Ankle we can assure clear communication regarding pricing and conferring with your insurance regarding their coverage. Not all foot conditions require custom orthotics and it is possible to modify–

Additionally, custom orthotics may not be necessary for all individuals, and over-the-counter options may be appropriate for minor foot problems or for individuals who have relatively healthy feet. Ultimately, the decision between custom orthotics and over-the-counter options should be made in consultation with a healthcare professional.
