What is a digit fracture?

A digit fracture is a break or crack in one of the bones of the toes, also known as phalanges. Fractures can occur due to a variety of causes, including direct impact, twisting, or crushing injuries.

Symptoms of a digit fracture may include pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty moving the affected finger or toe. In some cases, the bone may be visibly deformed or misaligned. Treatment for a digit fracture depends on the severity of the injury.

In many cases, a simple taping splint and surgical sandal may be sufficient to immobilize the affected toe and allow the bone to heal on its own. In more severe cases, surgery may be necessary to realign and stabilize the bone using pins, wires, screws, or plates. After treatment, physical therapy may be recommended to help restore strength and range of motion in the affected digit. Full recovery time can vary depending on the extent of the injury and the type of treatment received. Digital fractures and overall digital injuries take a significant amount of time to heal as they are prone to notable swelling due to small area, gravitational effects and daily ambulatory activity.

Make an appointment at PS Foot and Ankle to evaluate your toe injury, we will take X-Rays in the office, review them together and assess the nature of your injury and customize a treatment plan accordingly.
