What is a ganglion cyst?

A ganglion cyst of the foot is a small lump that typically develops near a joint or tendon in the foot or ankle. The cyst is filled with fluid and is often round or oval-shaped. It can vary in size, from a pea-sized bump to a larger lump that is several centimeters in diameter. Ganglion cysts are typically harmless, but they can cause pain and discomfort if they press on a nearby nerve or interfere with movement in the foot or ankle. They may also cause cosmetic concerns, as they can be visible under the skin. Sometimes it is difficult to discern a ganglion cyst from an epidermal inclusion cyst or other cystic manifestation. The exact cause of ganglion cysts is unknown, but they are believed to develop when the tissue surrounding a joint or tendon becomes inflamed or irritated, causing the fluid-filled cyst to form.

What is treatment for ganglion cyst?

Treatment for ganglion cysts depends on the size, location, and symptoms of the cyst. In some cases, ganglion cysts do not require treatment and may resolve on their own over time. However in some individuals the cyst may continue to cause pain, discomfort, or interference with movement, and for that there are several treatment options available:

  1. Footwear modifications: Wearing shoes with a wider toe box or more supportive soles may help to relieve pressure on the cyst and reduce pain.

  2. Aspiration: Aspiration involves using a needle to drain the fluid from the cyst. This is typically performed in a doctor’s office and may be followed by a steroid injection to reduce inflammation.

  3. Surgery: If the cyst is causing significant pain or interfering with movement, it may be surgically removed. This is typically performed as an outpatient procedure and involves making a small incision over the cyst and removing it along with the surrounding tissue.

It is important to note that ganglion cysts may recur even after treatment, and there is a small risk of infection or nerve damage associated with aspiration or surgery. If you think you have a cyst on your foot and do not to hesitate to come make an appointment at PS Foot & Ankle.
